CATCHING UP WITH MARIE CLAIRE
As part of the Soil Association’s Organic September campaign, we caught up with Marie Claire’s Beauty and Style Director Lisa Oxenham to discuss all things organic… and how to combat greenwashing. Madagascar School Opening
What better way to mark three years partnering with United World Schools (UWS) than to open our third school together in Madagascar! Thanks to our partnership, this is one of the first ever UWS schools to be opened in this beautiful country.
Our school is in the southwest region of the island, in a village called Ampandrivotse. Recently, overfishing by foreign countries in this area has begun to threaten the local community’s way of life, meaning education is critically important for its future. Now, 200 children will receive an education for the very first time.
For the opening of the school, the community held a traditional stone-laying ceremony. Two stones were sealed together with concrete while the oldest and most respected person in the community spoke to the ancestors for their protection of the construction site, and amber rum was poured over the tools and newly sealed stones. It was an unforgettable, magical occasion.
A massive thank you to everyone who’s championed Tropic over the past few years. You’ve helped us bring education to a new community on a new continent!
GIVING BACK TO THE UK AND BEYOND
Every year, when we unveil our festive collections at our launch event for our Ambassador community, we help support causes incredibly close to our hearts. As it’s been three years since our last in-person event, we’ve backed three wonderful charities in 2022.
First up, the Winnie Mabaso Foundation. This charity supports vulnerable and orphaned children, grannies, and the wider community – particularly those living with HIV/AIDS – in Finetown, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Next, Papyrus – a charity campaigning and offering support for the prevention of young suicide in the UK.
And finally, Big Change – a charity which wants to see young people in the UK thrive with skills for life, not just for exams.
We’re so pleased to say that the running total we’ve raised is over £120,000, which will be split across the charities. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, and to our kind raffle donors who helped us secure some fab prizes.
