My Skincare Routine – A Foodie Stays Fit

For years I’ve been publishing reviews of my favorite skincare products, but I didn’t have a permanent place to update with my skincare routine. I’m a huge fan of trying new products, and while I have some very trusty favorites, I’ve recently added a couple newbies to my arsenal. While this seems like a lot of steps, it takes less than 5 minutes and I’ve seen a big difference in my skin’s appearance and texture since I started doing a full skincare routine with all the basics steps (cleanse, tone, treat, hydrate, protect) and doing it consistently. And I NEVER EVER sleep with makeup on!

If you want to learn more about the basics of skincare and how to choose the right products for you, sign up for my mini skincare 101 course — it’s all sent right to your inbox over the course of a few days.

Additionally, I have promo codes for a few of the brands listed below but I know it’s a long post so I wanted to call them out here as well!

For all the products listed below, a little goes a long way, so less is more.  You’ll find that just 1-2 pumps (or a black bean size amount of product) is enough for most of these. If you’re used to using drugstore brands, you may feel like it’s not enough but they’re very concentrated and you won’t get more benefit by layering on thick amounts!

My Skincare Routine A Foodie Stays Fit Skincare Routine

My Skincare Routine

If I list multiple products, it’s either because I alternate days or because I have two products that I like and I just use whatever I have on hand! I’m a skincare junkie so I’m always buying more than I need!!

My morning skincare routine

When I first wake up, I’ll often spritz my face with the Dime Beauty Thirsty Face Mist. I have super dry skin, and I like how this refreshes my skin without a full skincare routine. It’s nice to use before I head out to run or to pilates! I use this Image Ormedic Balancing Lip Enhancement Complex or this Ilia Lip Wrap Reviving Balm first thing in the morning or before a workout.

1. Cleanse

Beautycounter Countermatch Refresh Foaming Cleanser – This is a smooth cleanser that foams just slightly with water. I love that my skin feels refreshed, but not stripped from it’s natural oils.

Beautycounter Counterstart Cococream Cleanser – I prefer this one since it feels even more hydrating than the Countermatch one. It does not foam, so if you prefer a cleanser that feels like it’s lathering, you’ll want to go with Countermatch instead.

2. Tone

After I get out of the shower, I use the Countertime Essence. This is the only toner I’ve ever liked for daily use.

3. Serum

I layer a few serums in the morning.

Colleen Rothschild Hyaluronic Acid Serum – This is what I’m currently using. I love that my skin feels immediately hydrated after using this. I apply it while my skin is just slightly damp.

Beautycounter All Bright C Serum – This is my vitamin C of choice. This brightens dark spots and improves dullness. It also protects against environmental stressors and potential sun damage during the day. It smells like summer, too! Read my full review here.

Beautycounter Countertime Tripeptide Radiance Serum – I apply this last. It helps reduce the appearance of aging using a plant-derived Retinatural Complex.

4. Hydrate

Next I use the Beautycounter Countertime Soft Cream for my daytime moisturizer. A little goes a long way, and it also contains bakuchiol which gives similar results as retinol but it’s safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

5. Eye cream

I have used the  Beautycounter Countertime Eye Cream every morning and night for years. It helps with fine lines, dark circles and puffiness. I’ve tried a LOT of eye creams over the years and keeping coming back to this one. When I run out of my current eye cream, I’ll go back to this!

6. Protect with SPF

Lastly I use Countersun Daily Sheer SPF. (Review here.) I wish I could take my younger self by the shoulders, shake her and say “WEAR SPF!”.  I love Beautycounter’s because it goes on SO smooth, absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave my skin greasy. It layers really well under makeup too. While I wish my face lotion had SPF to remove a step, so far I haven’t found a face lotion with SPF that I like as much as the Soft Cream.

My evening skincare routine

Best case scenario, I do this routine about 30-60 minutes before heading to bed. (You can see my sleep must-haves here). This gives my skin enough time to absorb everything before I put on my sleeping eye mask and put my face on my pillow (stomach sleeper here!). Most nights I change into PJs about an hour before I go to bed and do my skincare routine. Then, Tommy and I watch a show together before I go to bed.

1. Cleanse

I alternate depending on my mood and sometimes I double cleanse, starting with the oil first and the balm second. The Colleen Rothschild balm is SOOOO hydrating, and I prefer it to the Beautycounter Cleansing Balm.

Beautycounter Countertime Lipid Defense Cleansing Oil – I became obsessed with oil cleansers a year or so ago. The cleansing oil helps remove makeup and this cleanser helps remove any remaining trace dirt and makeup and really clean my pores. I apply this cleanser to damp skin, add a little more water to help it foam and then just rinse off. I have VERY dry skin but my skin hasn’t felt overly dry or stripped with these two cleansers, which I’m happy about. My full review is linked here.

Colleen Rothschild Cleansing Balm – This is super hydrating and smells amazing. I apply this to dry skin, then remove with a wet muslin towel or washcloth. (Use code TERILYN20 for 20% off.)

3. Tone

After I wash my face, I use the Beautycounter Countertime Essence, which is similar to a toner but milkier and more hydrating. I apply a nickel size amount to my palm and then pat it into my skin. I let it sit for about 30 seconds and then apply my serum.

4. Serum

I loosely follow a skincare cycle routine. This helps so my skin isn’t over-treated (which can lead to irritation, redness or breakouts). I also alternate some of the pricier products with more affordable ones so my super expensive products last longer!

Sunday – Exfoliate with peel pads. I switch between iS Clinical Peel pads (more aggressive – review here) and the Colleen Rothschild peel pads, which are better for sensitive skin.

Monday – Colleen Rothschild Retinol Supreme Night Oil – This contains vitamin C, so it’s a total powerhouse. It helps improve skin texture and cell turnover, while also brightening dark spots. And it’s much better for sensitive skin than a typical retinol since this is in oil form. This is the first retinol I’ve actually liked!

Tuesday – I LOVE this SkinMedica Serum. It’s pricey, but it’s a clinical-grade anti-aging serum that targets fine lines, deep wrinkles and sagging skin.d I have noticed my skin feels more taut and smoother after using this for just a few weeks. This is more hydrating than my other night time serums, so I treat this day like a skin “recovery day”. (Full review here.)

Wednesday – I let my skin recover another day and use the Beautycounter Countertime Tripeptide Radiance Serum.

Thursday – The next day, I’ll exfoliate. I use either the Beautycounter AHA Reflect Effect Mask or the Colleen Rothschild Enzyme Polish. I love both, but I do think the Beautycounter AHA mask is more aggressive than the Colleen Rothschild mask so if you have sensitive skin, keep that in mind.

Friday – Retinol again. Colleen Rothschild Retinol Supreme Night Oil (use TERILYN20 for 20% off).

Saturday – Recovery day after retinol. I use the SkinMedica Serum.

Sunday – One more day of recovery. I’ll typically use the Beautycounter Countertime Tripeptide Radiance Serum which helps with signs of aging but is gentle and soothing.

5. Hydrate

I use Beautycounter Countertime Supreme Cream – I keep trying other brands for a night cream, including Obagi and Augustinus Bader, but I keep going back to the Supreme Cream since it’s cheaper and is more hydrating! I also love the thick texture.

I’m planning to order this Chara Omni night cream once it’s back in stock since I’ve heard it’s AMAZING. Once I do, I’ll update this post with my thoughts! I think code TERILYN10 should work on it!

Most nights I follow the supreme cream with Colleen Rothschild No. 9 Face Oil. (Again, use TERILYN20 for 20% off!) It’s incredibly hydrating and has the most amazing texture – like silk and velvet combined!

6. Eye Cream

I use this Colleen Rothschild Retinol Supreme Eye Serum every night, followed by my regular eye cream. I currently have the Colleen Rothschild Complete Eye Cream, but I’ll go back to the Beautycounter Countertime Eye Cream once I finish this jar.

7. Lip Mask

I LOVE this Ilia Lip Wrap overnight mask! My lips are plumper since using it with a more defined border. Take that aging!
